For my music class at UVic, I have be asked to try and learn a new instrument while demonstrating my progress through blog posts and videos.
I have decided to do the piano. I have chosen to do this because I use to play the piano 7 years ago, but stopped because life got too busy. I still have some knowledge of how to play but it’s different once you actually start trying to play on a physical piano. I have chosen to play the songs Somewhere Over the Rainbow from Wizard of Oz and Tale as Old as Time from Beauty and the Beast at an intermediate level. These were two of my favourite movies growing up as a child and I’ve always wanted to be able to play a song from them. My goal by the midterm date (Oct. 22) is to be able to play Somewhere Over the Rainbow fluidly and by the final date (Nov. 26), Tale as Old as Time fluidly.
The biggest obstacle that I have is that I’m crazy busy. I’m going to have to put lots of time and energy into making sure I can complete my goals.
A couple questions I have for myself include:
- Do I remember how to read music?
- Do I remember any scales?
- Do I remember how to keep a steady rhythm?
- Can I demonstrate the difference between quieter and louder parts?
- Will it come back a lot faster than I think it will?
I’m excited to see how this inquiry will work out in the end and I’m very excited to jump back into playing the piano.
Madi 🙂
